Careerism

About 7 years ago, a very special person pointed out to me that the word we use to describe our path through (usually) economic employment also means to move uncontrollably in a certain direction, i.e. 'The bus full of small children careered down the hillside'.

I always thought that was quite amusing, especially when compared alongside the other well-known headstone of successful, civilised life, the mortgage or 'death grip'.

Like many young adults the idea of settling into a career was very unappealing to me. It seemed to rule out any possibility for change and oppurtunity to doss about a bit (or a lot!). 9-5? No ta...etc etc! On the other hand, the survival instinct kicks in, and since buying a bit of land and becoming self-sufficient is a luxury I can't afford, the knowledge that I'm going to have to need enough money to go to the supermarket (;)) and pay a landlord and feed my expensive leisuretime pursuits, I'm basically going to have to get a job (for a bit).

I'm sure I'll post some more positive stuff soon....don't fret!

Humans

I've always been discerning when it comes to forming friendships because I've got a pretty strong idea about what I like in people and what I dont. In general, I would ask for people to be genuine. Even if someone is totally different to me, I can appreciate their honesty. Secondly, they've got to be interested in something. Whether its music, riding bikes, baking cakes, fixing people, fighting, calligraphy, chatting about cool stuff, blowing things up - whatever, passion is attractive. Thirdly, the capacity for an open mind and general flexibility in their perspectives about the world.

When I've found these things in people I've tried very hard to hold onto them and hang out with them more. As a result, I can get quite attached. And when they move away, I get upset. I think I am feeling a bit disorientated since I finished my course, but the fact that my closest girlfriend has pretty much left (away from the city...like she's always said) has left me with a bit of a void!!

Cool girls are hard to find. I hope some come along soon....
